    nothing new,
Nokia Ovi maps (Available on Symbian) lets you download the map of an Entire Country.
my Map for Malaysia is about 270MB, i think the whole world would be about 4 - 6GB
and its not only a map, its an offline turn-by-turn street navigation for use while driving too

Symbian > Android (in terms of navigation)

Not that new feature, they had it in google maps labs for a long time. I like OSMAND+ for offline maps much more.

ITS A HUGE PROBLEM if your traveling in another country as a tourist because you usually dont want international data roaming fees. if you have to wait to find your next internet cafe its usually not convenient at that point, unless you dont speak the language. eitherway downloadable city options would be a nice FEATURE FOR GOOGLE.

I live in Brazil (Yes this end of the world) here is a place not so recognized by Google and offline Google Maps is not available in Brazil is more a bug that allows us (Brazilians) to use this advantage more than point in several cities in Brazil has the crooked roads, removed, added, among other ie not every place is navigable so I envy you Americans congratulations on being the greatest world power. Funny thing - it doesn’t work anymore since the update hit several weeks ago. Every map I try to save off-line simply fails. No matter how many times I hit resume, it fails. This caught me by surprise when I thought it downloaded a map of Providence R.I. but when I got there - nothing was saved and I’ve been trying ever since. It worked fine back in early June - the whole northeast US was saved. Now it won’t save a thing. I only use internet connections, not phone and all it says is “FAILED”.

YOLO, I can go on holiday and hope my superphone ‘reads’ my calendar and downloads the right map!

You use YOLO when you’re gonna do something stupid, right! Well, I put my Nexus in the bin and bought a iPhone mini!
